Today is a great day. I have little airplanes flying around in my stomach because I am so excited. Finally I can share everything with you! This is a big post, but so are my dreams.
I’ve been pretty dramatic about 07/07/2014. I’ve also been a bit obsessive with those numbers. I mean, hello, I scheduled this post for 07:07.
I have never thought of myself as an entrepreneur. That word feels dirty to me and I have never seen the appeal of an unstable income, and the difficulty of setting something up. In university, Entrepreneurship 201 was my worst subject. I’ve never learned anything that awful or boring, and it’s second only in uselessness to me to Supply Chain Management (marketing student studying how many cm different factory items needed to be apart? no thank you).
And then I discovered Etsy. I also discovered a husband who works hard enough to support us both (financially and emotionally). I discovered that entrepreneurship does not mean another freaking corporate business with ties and pencil skirts. It does not mean a grand idea. Entrepreneurship does not mean a one million dollar (or rand or euro) idea.
To me, entrepreneurship (which I still struggle to say without a dirty taste in my mouth) is working towards something instead of working for working’s sake. Not just keeping busy so that you can get money at the end of the month, but actually loving what you do and waking up in the morning excited to get to your desk. Having even the most basic, and boring tasks of your job excite you to your core. To love talking to your customers and finding out what they like and making things for them for free because you just freaking love making it, and, bonus points! you get to make someone else happy too.
Entrepreneurship is wearing pants out of choice.
My husband was born an engineer, and I was just born. I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. But now, at the end of the day I tell him, “so this is what it’s like to feel fulfilled; this is what being on fire regarding what you’re talking about in a work situation feels like”. I can’t believe I ever thought it would be okay to not ever feel this way.
So you just came here for the Grand Announcement and not my long sob story? Okay. Let’s do it. I’m not as ready as I’d like to be for today, but this is the year of progress, not perfect. I’m laying my plans out to be kept accountable. I’m announcing them because I am damn proud of them, perfect or progressing.
While I would have loved to share seven things that are changing, in the spirit of being deliberate, I am focusing on three things. These changes are happening over the next six months. They will be my MITs on crack. I have things revolving around them, but these three are incredibly exciting for me.
The three are:
- Pretty Organised
- Launch physicals
- Photoshop for Memory Keepers
I’ll discuss each in detail:
1. Pretty Organised
Since I started Pretty Organised in September last year, it has grown into my favourite non-person thing in my heart. I have such a soft spot for it, and so many ideas for the store. It has been much more successful than I could have anticipated, both the shop sales, and the custom orders that have come out of it. I have learned more things since I started my Etsy store than the twenty five years before it. It is time to get my big ideas for the store happening, and turn it into a full time income. I’m getting deliberate about it. I gave it a website so that I can add longer descriptions and more photos than Etsy allows. There’s a whole bunch more planned for the website but for right now the extra photos are what’s important to me.
PS: obviously there is a coupon code in this post! 07072014 for a celebratory 25% off
2. Launch physicals
Something I’ve always wanted in my store is physical products. It makes having a store a little more real. Digital is fantastic, and expense-less, but there is something to be said for holding something that you’ve created in your hands. I’m expanding my currently digital-only store to have both options.
The South African post office is a big hindrance on this, but I’m going to stay real with my customers, start small, and learn quickly. I maintain that my best advice for Etsy storing is to just start, and learn afterwards. Of course I’m not going in completely naive; I’ve done my research.
3. Photoshop for Memory Keepers
THIS is something I have had on the back burner for ages. Something I am incredibly passionate about. I love Photoshop, I love teaching Photoshop and having other people use it and discover its wonders too. There are so many Photoshop tutorials on the internet, but I have yet to find one that is completely focused on memory keeping. Memory keepers don’t want to know how to use the healing brush, they want to know how to get strangers out of their photos. I am freaking butterflies in my guts excited about this. Watch this space.
Those are the three main things I will be doing as my own boss. I’m also going to be doing a lot of web and blog design, graphic design, and digital marketing. I’ve already got six amazing clients on retainer (big yay!). Send me an email if you think I’m a good fit for your blog re/design, custom print, custom planner, or other idea brought to fruition.
I’ve also made the (big for me) decision to share bits of my business with the blog. This lovely bunch of pixels has developed from weekly Project Life pages into something more personal. And part of me is my business. I’ll still never flood my feed with salesman talk, because I still share only what I’d want to read. I’ll be sharing my thoughts on being a small business owner (love that title), some tips, and lessons learned.
I’ve created a Facebook page and I do hope that you will like it. This was a big step for me because until recently I’ve kept rather quiet about what I do and blog about with my IRL friends. I’ll be sharing freebies, new blog posts, inspiration, and all that jazz there. I’m not the biggest Facebook fan, so you had better know that I’ll make it worth your while too.
I’ve got a little something I call Glitter Mail. Just fill in the name/email boxes in my sidebar. I’m excited about this. It’s a bimonthly bit of love delivered to you, and it starts the Friday after I’m back from Spain next week.
I cannot begin to thank each and every one of my friends for the crazy amount of support and cheerleading I’ve been given. I feel like I’ve had a baby because of all the love I’ve been showered with. Badger for the phonecalls, Olya for the dancing bunnies, Lauren and Andrea for the words, Mary for the best secret photos, Vanessa for the new look and feel, my Pretty Somethings (VOCAL♥), obviouslymyT, and every single Instagram comment, email, and blog post. I don’t know what I did to deserve you but I love you and my life is better because of you.
I’m so excited to take this journey, and I hope you are excited for me too.
